Brake Fluid

At some point over the winter my GT absorbed a shitload of water and air and turned it into a lethal cocktail.. At normal room temperature the rear wheel is locked fairly solid, thats how pumped up the brake is.

Thats no problem I just need to bleed and flush the old fluid and put in some new stuff…

Sure… no problem right.

Try buying DOT5.1 brake fluid. Was gonna take a week and have to be sent from california and any savings I make buying online I loose in shipping.

I did the next sensible thing, I went to the local auto parts store.. Only DOT3 and 4. So I go to the local motor bike store.. nah he has DOT3 but some guy came in asking for mineral oil last week…

I then visit the bike shop behind where I work, they charge 40$ A BRAKE for flushing.. so I’d be out 80$ plus tax, plus they order in the oil on Monday and it gets there on Friday.

So I’m back looking at that Motul DOT5.1 in the shop in California…

And while I’m changing fluids I should probably change the pads too..

So now the problem I have is finding pads for my Hope M4’s in America. EBay to the rescue! Waaaiit a minute, most everything I can find is for the “newer” model the Mono M4’s which wont work for me. I have old-style M4’s.

ARGH!

Well there is one guy on Ebay with some old style M4 pads…

Maybe I should buy a few sets just to be safe..

In a perfecet world wink I’d upgrade from old M4’s to new Mono-M4’s or Mono-Mini’s or whatever they are called…

Anyway, I need to go order some Motul from California.

This is where it lives, locked away, being guarded by the trusty GT mountain bike, ready to pounce at a moments notice

Working and Biking

The screws are slowly turning at work, none of which are my fault,  but things upstairs change and those downstairs have to deal with it, so I ended up going in to work on my Saturday and working until the afternoon. bleah.

The big winner was on the way home I went mtn biking. yay. The i-drive was pretty admirable, but I am ripping off the stock disc brakes pronto. They have no stopping power what so ever and I am only 140lbs! Dangerous shit they are plus they are dialed for Americans (meaning the rear brake and front brake are reversed on the handlebars….) I’m going to load it up with my Hope M4’s and front/rear levers will be placed on the CORRECT sides hehe smile

Need to work on the gearing as well, but I want the cable to stretch a bit more first. Right now I can’t get into the biggest rear ring. Going from #2 to #1 causes the chain to fly off over the top cog.

Its also great to have a bike for my size, as much as I loved my Specialised rockhopper, its 19” frame was too tall for me, this little GT i-drive is just right for me, being smaller I can flick it around nicely.

The other disappointment was the fire road I picked to go explore down wasn’t very long before it dead ended (I did get to follow of a trail of spent bright red 12ga shotgun cartridges like breadcrumbs), and I had to turn around as the trees left no room for passage.

Still, it was sooo nice to be out in the sun biking!!

New Mountain Bike

I have a mountain bike arriving (this week I hope)... Its a closeout sale special, GT i-drive 5 4.0. Same frame across all the models just different components.

It should be mostly built, but I will be removing the tektro disc brakes and putting my Hope M4’s on… assuming cable paths + cable lengths are compatible.

Its running 5 inches of rear travel, and for my weight I probably only need 4 inches rear travel.

Ive heard a few people have snapped the dogbones attaching frame to the bottom bracket but other than that the frame is supposedly rock solid which is nice. Easier to slowly replace cheap components than the frame.

Downside is the frame can be a bear to clean when muddy.

Sure, I wanted a more expensive bike but with a mortgage and baby coming, beggars cant be choosers and going from no-bike to bike will just be great.  Its so nice of GT to dump prices on last years models and give them away for a bargain.

Ive already dusted off the helmet smile

Ebay

Sometimes, selling stuff on Ebay can be fun. You advertise Item A has property B and the postage is C…

Then someone sends you an email and says,  Does it have property B? and how much is postage?

Its not as if you write war and peace as a description of the item, but bloody hell, I’m sure some people just look at the item picture and not read the two line description…

So I am selling my mountain bike suspension forks and it has a 7 and 3/4 inch steerer tube legth.. and yes someone sent me an email asking how long the steerer tube was…
